Creating a Sustainable Hydrogen Production Process

The GH2 project was awarded €2.2 million under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme and £1.06 million from UKRI’s Innovate UK to create a pioneering hydrogen production process that leverages solar energy-driven technologies to simultaneously produce green H2 at a cost comparable to fossil-derived H2 and high-value chemicals like acetic acid.

To deliver the project, we have assembled a consortium comprised of internationally renowned scientists and globally recognised innovation experts who aim to produce green H2 at a small and medium scale within 3-5 years, and at a scale large enough to meet the demands of industry thereafter.

As one of the nine projects that were funded under the European Innovation Council's Pathfinder challenge call “Novel Routes to Green Hydrogen Production", we are committed to helping position the EU as a leader in green H2 production.

In addition, our ambition aligns with the objectives framed within the EU Green Deal policy, acknowledges the societal demand for decarbonisation and the urgency to build a future-orientated European energy sector that foregrounds environmental and economic sustainability.

The system for green H2 production and co-production of acetic acid that we are designing will have a long-term impact spanning numerous sectors, and promote job creation and environmental sustainability.
